Kinesthetic Furniture for Specially Designed Classroom

Abbey Stanton, Sunset Hill Elementary, Special Education, $3154

In Their Own Words

This project will benefit students who are placed in our Federal Setting III district emotional behavioral program at Sunset Hill Elementary. Students within this program demonstrate a significant need within the area of social-emotional behavioral regulation. Many of our students have significant backgrounds of trauma, mental health needs and/or ongoing chronic stress and require a high level of motor activity. Many of these students have motor activity, occupational therapy, and sensory/motor supports written into their IEPs as accommodations that they require in order to access their learning, maintain emotional behavioral regulation and make progress within all areas across school settings.

The goal of the SDC program is to increase emotional behavioral regulation skills, student skills and provide a therapeutic classroom environment with the goal to reduce their need for special education services and increase their time in general education. We have been successful with our programming and have been consistently graduating 1-2 students out of our program per year and back to the resource/general education model. Kinesthetic furniture could be a helpful additional tool within our SDC to increase student success and speed up growth.
