Gender and Race Diverse Manikins for the Health Science Pathway
Molly Jordan, Wayzata High School. $7802.
In Their Own Words
The Health Science Pathway at Wayzata High School has been met with great enthusiasm by students and community members alike since it was conceived in the 2021-2022 school year. By offering courses that prepare students for a career in healthcare in our own building, we eliminate many of the barriers that students encounter when pursuing health science education at the high school level, such as transportation, loss of social interaction with friends, loss of access to clubs due to timing of courses at outside institutions, and loss of support from teachers trained specifically in secondary education. With these barriers out of the way, we have seen expansion and diversification in the student population interested in pursuing health science education in high school.
From Our Students:
"I like that they help to simulate what it will be like to work with residents. As we are practicing occupied bed making it helps to simulate the weight of a real resident."
"I like how everyone is gentle with them and treats them like real residents. It's good to practice talking with them as if we are working with real people."
"I appreciate that they are all different and represent the variety of residents we will care for in clinicals."
Status: funded in May 2023, fully in use in SY 2023-2024.
