WHS Media Center Refresh

Jennifer Samec, WHS, $2300

Why This Grant?

With an infusion of grant money, I can add new titles, expand sections that are seeing increased use, add duplicate copies of popular titles, and get our collection caught back up after the lean years.

“One of the most exciting parts of a media center is matching readers to books. There is nothing better than asking a student about their interests or what types of stories they like (from past reading or from shows they watch), pulling a few options off the shelves, and watching their face light up when my description of a book hits them just right. Developing a collection that can meet the varied interests of our large school population is a fun challenge that I am always working on. I note when we can't seem to find the right book for a student or when a particular book or genre is popular and work to meet the needs of the students there.” - Jennifer Samec

From our students:

“I like having the manga here because the seasons of anime take too long to come out so it's nice to be able to read the books.”

- Ibrahim (grade 9)

“I really like manga because I like the way they draw the faces and how they write the stories.”

- Arielle (grade 10)

“Having a manga section in our Media Center makes it a quick and easy place to get manga.”

- Rayhan (grade 11)

“I like to read manga in print. I like the feel of the pages instead of scrolling online. It is also the most authentic way to read manga.”

- Rizwan (grade 11)
